Narcissism

The topic of narcissism has become prominent in our culture these days. It is common in all the forms of social media and it is present in every aspect and strata of our society, culture and work life. It is estimated that prevalence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) in the US is about 1 in every 200 people.

There are different grades of severity with narcissism. As a continuum, someone can be generally selfish and self-centered. Then there are those who have narcissistic traits and then those who meet the criteria for NPD. It is important to make these distinctions when discussing narcissism with others.

Most of the attention NPD has been on the person with the diagnosis. What we have learned is that the people who have been in relationship with someone with NPD also needs attention. Often, their personal life and personality are in disarray.

The good news is that the steps and stages of recovery from  narcissistic relationships are distinct and achievable. The mental and emotional confusion that people report from these relationships are most likely to be extreme. The effects can be evident in a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing and the integrity of their personality. There is much more research on the person with NPD than those affected by it. Recovery is possible.

I have had the good fortune to work with people recovering from NPD relationships. A colleague and I have put together an 8-week program to help people get free. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
